The Mariners Inn in Detroit, Michigan, depends on donations to provide housing and services to their clients. They serve adult and young adult men through residential and outpatient programs.
Residential Program for Men with Substance Use Disorder
Their residential program is for men 18 years old or older. This is offered to those struggling with substance use disorder or co-occurring disorders, meaning a mental illness is present with addiction. The program is open to men with developmental or physical disabilities, who have economic problems, who are homeless, have legal issues, are illiterate, or experienced trauma or loss.
During treatment participants engage in the 12 Step principles, expressive arts, cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing. Integrated services include individual and group therapy, case management, vocational assistance, GED support and literacy services.
Education is provided on the nature of addiction, relapse prevention and recovery supports. They also cover topics such as parenting, healthy relationships, HIV/AIDS, current events, anger management and conflict resolution. Additionally, clients can be trained in the areas of health and wellness, spirituality and vocational readiness.
Outpatient Program for Men with Addictions
Their outpatient treatment program is offered to men who have completed residential care or as an alternative to residential care. The program may include evaluations, assessments, education, prevention, a 12 Step group and individual therapy.
The program treats issues including depression, anxiety, family issues and trauma. Clients can also receive assistance through intervention services and case management. Plus vocational assistance and GED classes are available for those who want to enhance their employment opportunities.
Aftercare Services
Peer mentoring provides access to community resources, helps clients transition back into society, assists clients in finding transportation, and supports the continuation of sobriety. The alumni program meets every Sunday at 4:00 pm. The meeting provides counseling and services that help clients maintain sobriety long term.
Family Support
The Strengthening Families Program seeks to strengthen families by teaching them how to support the client in addiction and recovery. This is offered through family orientation workshops and counseling. The program educates children of the client on the disease of addiction, teaches parenting skills and seeks to reunite families.
Young Adult Treatment
The Residential Youth Prevention Program is for young men ages 18 to 29. This program is offered to young men who are at risk for homelessness, criminal behavior, and falling into addiction. The residential setting includes therapy, drug prevention classes and vocational assistance.
